It Stinks

When the 2006 College Football Blogger Awards were first announced, we thought the concept was a great idea, given the multitude of excellent blogs that are deserving of recognition. We also thought that there as no way in hell that we were one of those.

However, as the nominations rolled out, we were surprise to discover that we were nominated for two awards:
  • The Dr. Z Award: For cogent, interesting analysis - Emphasis placed on statistical manipulation, well researched pieces that reveal something new, and/or solid argumentative pieces that function as the authoritative last word on a subject.
  • The Jay Sherman Award: For the blog best keeping tabs on the man and calling out all of the injustices in the college football world - Consistently ahead-of-the-curve on controversial issues in college football.

To even be nominated, was an honor for us.

So as the winners were announced, we were not the least bit surprised, nor disappointed, that we did not win The Dr. Z Award. To even be in the same category as the top-notch blogs such as MGoBlog (the winner), Sunday Morning Quarterback (the runner up), and the other nominees Blue-Gray Sky, Burnt Orange Nation, and DawgSports is an honor.

We always enjoy the work done by these bloggers: whether it be MGo's analysis of every play in Michigan's games, SMQ's Herculean breakdown of every team in their pre-season preview, BGS's consistently insightful and incredibly well-written pieces, BON's post after-our-own-hearts on the mysteries of the computer polls, or Dawg's in-depth commentary on nearly every topic from bowl previews to BlogPoll ballots (and the ubiquitous Kristin Davis pictures).

We are, however, very honored to receive The Jay Sherman Award for best critic. We always strive for excellence here at markmaybewrong, so receiving an award named after a legend in the field of criticizing who is known also for his ability to burp louder than anyone except Eudora Welty is truly flattering.

We are, of course, not entirely convinced that this shouldn't have won instead:

In all seriousness, thanks to all our readers, the bloggers who took the time to vote, and all those involved in putting together these awards. Our congratulations also to the other nominees: Wizard of Odds (runner up), Braves and Birds, and The Corperate Headquarters of the San Antonio Gunslingers, who are all just as deserving as us.

More Good News

Finally, another joyous announcement here at markmaybewrong as Dan and his wife welcomed their second child into their family last Friday with the birth of their daughter Eva Elizabeth. Mom and baby are home and doing just fine. We look forward to seeing them both at the tailgating fields next year.

We're Back!!

Sorry for the long layoff everyone. Final exams (grading, not taking), the holidays, and real-world commitments got in the way of our blogging the past couple of weeks.

We did not do a very good job keeping tabs on the “experts” bowl picks over the holidays as I lacked a TiVo while away. I will say this, the college bowl season was so much more enjoyable with my being able to hit the mute button every time Lee Corso, Mark May, or Craig James opened their mouths rather than having to sit there and listen to what they were saying. We do have plenty of season recaps in the wings though including the regular-season picks final standings, Heisman predictions revisited, pre-season polls, and national championship predictions (I’ll give you a hint, no one picked Florida)

We obviously never got up the bowl youmaybewrong contest running (sorry); however, one of our loyal readers did e-mail us his bowl picks. We have only one response for that:

Neeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd!!!!!!!!!!
Keep and eye out over the next couple of days for some new content.

youmaybewrong Week 14 Picks

Got this up late. You'll just have to trust me that we didn't change our picks after the MAC Championship game finished.

Speaking of which, that game, the Air Force/TCU game, and the SEC title game were all very competitive based on our readers' picks.

It looks like the contest might ride on the outcomes of the C-USA and the ACC title games. Contest leader "anohioirish" has Southern Miss and Georgia Tech while 2nd and 3rd place entrants "dls141" and "RodBeck" have Houston and Wake Forest.

Likewise for braggin rights here on the blog, Brian has Southern Miss and Wake Forest while I have Houston and Georgia Tech.

Update: Congratulations to "anohioirish" who despite going 5-5 this week, won the overall youmaybewrong contest with a .738 winning percentage, picking games in all but one week.

Brian went 7-3 this week, holding me at bay to take the bloggers bragging rights with a .714 winning percentage. He averaged 7.5 correct pick over the last four weeks to pass me, Dan, and "Kanka".

The best pickes this week were "CorsoForBestSupportingMale" and "Willy Mac (DFIG)" who both went 8-2.

Thanks for everyone who participated. We'll be using your picks to see exactly how the average joe college football fan compared to the "experts."

Also, as a special bonus for our regular pickers, we'll be extending the contest into the post-season with every bowl game being on the slate. Look for that in a couple of weeks.

the Conversation Week 13

After getting back from my mini-vacation in LA over Thanksgiving, we dive back into the Conversation. It's been an interesting week with Texas, Boston College, West Virginia, and Georgia Tech all losing to sub-par competition. It was again fairly easy to determine the top two tiers with the only real debate being who belongs in Tier III. Let us know what you think.

Though the Gators' offence has been sputtering lately, so has their opposition.

The Wolverines are waiting for the BCS selection and rooting like hell for UCLA and Arkansas.
Southern Cal10-110-16-169-43.61655-40.5799-1223
A convincing win over Notre Dame adds another feather to Southern Cals' cap. If only they hadn't lost to Oregon St. . . .

A loss to the Tigers bumps the Hogs to Tier III.
Auburn10-27-22-269-56.55242-39.5194-27128
A win against the Crimson Tide keeps Auburn in the Conversation. The loss to Arkansas keeps them out of the SEC championship game.
Hawaii9-21-13-148-63.43211-23.3240-1352531
Hawaii has shown themselves to be a resilient non-BCS team worthy of mention. We can't fault them too much for losing at both Alabama and Boise St. by relatively close margins. The win against Purdue is impressive.
Louisville10-18-12-162-48.56437-41.4743-19513
West Virginia's loss to South Florida further degrades Louisville's SOS leaving them in Tier III.
LSU10-27-22-271-52.57741-38.5194-2546
A solid win against Arkansas means absolutely nothing for the SEC's automatic BCS bowl bid. It is a good thing we are keeping the BCS system because these regular season games wouldn't be nearly as important with a playoff system.
Notre Dame10-27-24-267-54.55447-40.5403-210119
Another crushing loss to a solid Tier II team. The Irish have a weaker SOS with both Purdue and Georgia Tech losing, but remain in the Conversation with a solid record of 4-2 against 0.500+ BCS teams.
Oklahoma10-28-23-260-62.49235-50.4122-2171618
The Sooners continue to win and have a date with Nebraska for the Big 12 championship title.
Virginia Tech9-27-22-262-51.54938-42.4753-2161817
The most impressive ACC team is not in the conference title game.
Wisconsin10-17-12-152-60.46431-38.4492-1131511
You can badger us all you want, but you're still not getting into Tier II without a marquee win.
Dropped teams:
  • Boston College- The Canes sucks this year. Apparently, so do the Eagles.
  • Georgia Tech - The stars are aligning for another three loss ACC champ as I predicted earlier in the season.
  • Texas - College football's most overrated team losses again and still ends up getting ranked seven spots higher than the team that just beat them (Harris and Coaches Poll).

Further, attrition is promised next week as the conference title games kickoff along with a few rivalry games. We will release our final regular season Conversation piece next week.

youmaybewrong Week 13 Picks

A pretty straight foward week with only two competive games in the opinion of our readers. LSU narrowly edges out Arkansas with 55% of the picks. Likewise, just a little more than half of our readers (52%) pick Middle Tenneessee St. to defeat Troy and claim the Sun Belt Conference crown. The final "suprise" is that 72% our readers pick the Irish to upset the Trojans.

In demonstrating that blood is not thicker than water, Brian went against the Irish and the Yellow Jackets, perhaps in an attempt to take over the blogger lead. Dan and I are identical, so there is not ground to be made up there.

Enjoy sitting on your stuffed, fat ass today and watching college football (as I will do), and be sure to check back after the games for the results.

Update: Ok, done sulking . . . because I am, that's why.

Best pickers this week were "BDT" and "WacArnold's" at 9-1. "anohioirish" retook the overall lead going 7-3.

Among us here at markmaybewrong, Brian had a bang up week and passed up Dan and I. He is now up by one game for the blogger lead.

Contest closes Thursday at 5:00 pm ET for the MAC Championship Game.

Current Standings

the Conversation Week 12

The holidays have screwed up our schedules, so their won't be a Suck-O-Meter post this week. It will return in all its glory next week. Here is the belated Converstation post.

The top tiers pretty much wrote themselves. The only debate came in Tier III was we wondered what exactly "warrenting some discussion" means. After a few trips around the circular logic carousel, here is what we came up with. (remember, this is based on the results through last week)
TierTeamRecord.500+ BCSOpp. RecordCPU Rankings

IOhio St.12-010-03-064-55.53838-45.4585-0111
No doubt about this one. Can they just decline all the bowl invitations?

IIArkansas9-17-12-146-50.47930-36.4553-15115
10-0 since their opening night disaster means Arkansas is solidly in Tier II.
Boise St.10-01-02-040-50.4446-18.2501-012147
Doesn't matter which conference you are in. If you are perfect at this point in the season, you are a pretty impressive team.
Florida9-17-14-160-37.61935-30.5385-1456
I don't think their 62 point victory impressed anyone, and despite their close wins, they did win, and that is all that matters in the Conversation.
Michigan11-19-13-175-46.62044-41.5184-1232
A three-point loss to the best team in the country doesn't drop you much, but is does drop you into Tier II.
Notre Dame10-17-14-157-50.53337-38.4935-16104
Perfect since the Michigan loss, now comes the game everyone has been waiting for.
Southern Cal9-19-14-156-39.58945-36.5568-1323
Beating a solid Cal team makes Southern Cal's resume all the more impressive; however, it does not erase that loss to a 6-4 team.
TierTeamRecord.500+ BCSOpp. RecordCPU Rankings
DI-ABCSDI-ABCSTop 40KMJSDW
IIIAuburn10-27-22-264-51.55737-37.5004-29179
The Iron Bowl victory was a must to keep Auburn in the Conversation, but it not enough to make up for the Georgia blowout loss.
Boston College8-25-23-155-39.58527-30.4744-1181817
A lot of debate about BC. How much does that 2-point loss against 2-8 NC State count against the eagles? In the end, wins over Clemson, BYU, VA Tech, and Maryland and their .585 opponents' winning percentage makes the Eagles worthy of mention.
Georgia Tech8-27-22-247-45.51130-38.4412-2172619
Another debatable team, losses to only 10-1 ND and 8-3 Clemson are made up for by their impressive victory over VA Tech and their win over Maryland.
Louisville9-17-13-153-39.57630-33.4763-1749
Their Rutgers' loss does look quite as good this week, but their Big East schedule has given them some tests in West Virginia and S. Florida that demonstrate just how talented this team is.
LSU9-26-22-257-47.54831-34.4773-211811
With losses only to Conversation teams and wins over a whole slate of decent teams including Tennessee, LSU deserves mention.
Oklahoma9-27-23-253-52.50530-43.4111-2232023
Another team with a whole bunch of decent wins. Their loss to Texas is acceptable and we have been trying not to hold the Oregon loss against them too much (although that is becoming more difficult as Oregon proved themselves to be worse and worse), so the Sooners are worthy of mention.
Texas8-26-23-158-41.58635-28.5562-121920
The Kansas St. loss is bad, but their Oklahoma win is impressive and the Nebraska win, despite the close nature of the game, (as per the rules of the Conversation) was a win. Also, It is tough to hold the Ohio St. loss against them too much, so while we won't be seeing Texas in Tier II anytime soon, they do get some mention in Tier III.
Virginia Tech8-26-22-252-40.56530-34.4693-2161516
Since losses to Georgia Tech and Boston College, They have defeated 8-3 Clemson and 8-2 Wake Forest, earning them a spot in Tier III.
Wisconsin10-17-12-152-56.48131-38.4493-18138
Their only loss is to Michigan, but their only win over teams with a winning record is 7-4 Penn St. and 7-4 Purdue. Beating sub-.500 teams does not get you into Tier II.

Dropped Teams:
  • Rutgers - How do you go from being in Tier I to being out of the Conversation? Lose to 5-5 Cincinnati, that's how.
  • Wake Forest - Their Boston College win is not enough to offset their second loss of the season.
  • West Virginia - Their only good win getting blown out does not help WVU resume.

youmaybewrong Week 12 Picks

Well, there were three or four really interesting games this week, and consequently there were definatelty some snoozers among the featured games. Not suprisingly, only four games stirred up any interest: Michigan/Ohio St. (61% Michigan), VA Tech/Wake Forest (59% Wake), Maryland/Boston College (64% BC), and Cal/USC (78% Southern Cal).

A few upsets sprinkled here and there, but not too many. Personally I think Cincinnati and W. Michigan could get something going, but after last week, there is no way I am going to be calling it out.

The three of us do have a long-shot bet in on the outcome of the Michgan/Ohio St. game. We'll be in our bomb shelter watching to see if it pans out.

For the record, Brian and I have Ohio St., and Dan has Michigan should our other prediction fall through.

Update:

Damn.

Another tough week to pick. The best record was 8-2 turned in by eleven different entrants. This is not suprising given that only nine people had Oregon losing to Arizona, and only six had Cincinnati upsetting Rutgers. Do I get bonus points for hunches? NO!

Two new leaders this week as newcomers "IrishMark" and "LeftCoaster" premier with .767 records. "anohioirish" is close behind at .764. I also retook the lead from Dan in the Bloggers Division, as his 6-5 week (with the incorrect pick of Harvard) dropped him back behind Brian and Kanka in fourth place.

Close for next week will be Friday at noon ET right before the kick of the Texas/Texas A&M game.
